Conserving the Southern Ocean: Informing the design, implementation, and value of protecting the waters around Antarctica

This study is funded by Pew Charitable Trust and is being led by Dr. Cassandra Brooks of the University of Boulder, Colorado.

Using a combination of individual-based models and Lagrangian particle tracking embedded in a Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS), we are assessing the connectivity between important spawning and nursery grounds around the Antarctic continent of two key Southern Ocean species, Euphausia superba (Antarctic krill) and Dissostichus mawsoni (Antarctic toothfish). Our research will contribute to improved management decisions and, hopefully, the implementation of  Southern Ocean MPAs. Further, our research approach will provide new tools to highlight the importance of MPAs, globally.
